Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient practice of using natural plant essences to promote health and wellbeing. It consists of the use of pure essential oils obtained from a wide assortment of plants, which have been steam distilled or cold-pressed from flowers, fruit, bark and roots.
The term "aromatherapie" was coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. He used the word to imply the therapeutic use of essential oils. Since the beginning of Aromatherapy, the practice has encompassed human pathology and the treatment of different conditions emotional and physical with essential oils. As Aromatherapy has developed into a practice it has adopted a holistic approach which encompasses the body, the mind and the spirit.
But it was actually Hippocrates 460 B.C. - 377 B.C, the Greek healer and physician, who said that “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day”. Long before aromatherapy essential oils were in common usage, many people used the actual plant to heal. Hippocrates is accredited with changing the way medicine was viewed and used healing plants as part of his Hippocratic theory.
Hippocrates used ginger as warming herb to soothe cold conditions; much of what is written about Hippocrates is subject to different verifications and interpretations but he did contribute much to medicine as we know it today.
As a holistic therapy, Aromatherapy is able to work on several levels of the individual’s wellbeing.
Essential oils, as a part of Ayurvedic practice, have been used for thousands of years to complement yoga practice. My approach has always been to use a combination of Yoga and Aromatherapy with Ayurvedic principles to completely balance and restore mind and body to their optimum health.
